On Thursday our Mother Goose lesson was all about friction!
This was a project that was provided to us by MGT. It was a perfect way to understand that friction slows things down! First, I let each child roll the balls in a pan over a piece of paper without any paint.
Then we squirted paint over the paper and the kids tried rolling the balls again. They could see and FEEL how the paint caused friction and slowed the balls down!
Next, we set up ramps outside. We predicted how far our balls would roll in the grass and on the sidewalk. It was soon clear that grass caused a lot more friction than the cement!
They had so much fun playing! After a short while the kids realized the grass was no fun at all. We moved both ramps to the sidewalk. We made one ramp very steep, and one not so steep. We predicted which one would make the balls roll farther and why.

We learned that texture is directly related to friction. Smooth textures make less friction that rough textures. I bought the kids a new texture matching board! I challenged them to match the textures with their eyes closed!
