Paul Bunyan and the Frozen Flames (Part 2)...

On Wednesday our Mother Goose lesson was a continuation of "Paul Bunyan and the Frozen Flames."

I surprised the kids this morning with a brand new GIGANTIC story board!  It is magnetic/dry erase on one side, and a felt board on the other side.  I laminated all of our Paul Bunyan story-telling pieces and added Velcro to the back.  I also set out all the stories we have been learning about and place the audio CD in the listening center for the kids to be independent with. 

The kids LOVED playing with this!  I am excited to purchase more felt stories!

Mother Goose provided us with the following supplies for each child to make a firefighter hat...

Once all the kids finished their hats, I allowed for plenty of dramatic play time.  I also took out some of our other dramatic play materials and costumes!  This was a great way for the kids to review what they learned about yesterday!

Next the kids completed a story dictation activity in their literacy workbook...

Next, the kids worked on a rainbow/color blue activity in their journal.  Tomorrow we will be learning about the story "How a Rainbow Was Made."

"The color blue makes me feel....happy!"

I asked the kids to complete the sentence, draw a rainbow, and then add blue items from our collage box.

Paul Bunyan and the Frozen Flames...

On Tuesday our Mother Goose lesson was all about "Paul Bunyan and the Frozen Flames."  This story included a lot of discussion and activities related to fire safety.  My experience has led me to believe that fire safety discussions require a lot of sensitivity around young children.  Because of this, I was unable to complete all of our activities planned in just one day.  You will find the second part of this lesson on my following post (Wednesday).

What should you do if you see a fire?

1. GO OUTSIDE!

2. Go to a window.

3. Stay near the floor.

4. DON'T HIDE!

We sang "Stop, Drop and Roll" to the tune of "Skip To My Lou."

Would you rather be really cold or really hot?  I don't really like this question...I personally would rather not be either.  This question makes for a good discussion though.  I asked this before reading the following story of the day to the kids...

The kids used the following story-telling pieces while they listened to the story on our audio CD throughout the day...

For our first activity we worked on the numbers 1-10 in our journals.  The kids traced their hands and we pretended they looked like flames to a fire.  They added one flame per fingertip, and then they wrote the sentence, "There are 10 flames."

Next, we discussed that we should NEVER go back inside a burning building (even if we forgot something important).  We shared where we thought would be a good meeting place outside, and why having a meeting place is important.  The kids were asked to draw their ideas...

These kids talked A TON during this!  I was thankful for this art activity!  What a great way to discuss an important topic!

After the kids drew their picture I gave them each a plate of red and yellow plate.  They painted their drawing with the paint and discovered that red and yellow make orange!

Next, Mother Goose provided us with this new science card...

I placed baking soda in two glasses and added pretend paper flames.  I poured vinegar in a spray bottle.  We discussed who we should call in the event of a fire.  We discussed that we should use the neighbor's phone.  I also showed the kids how to dial 9-1-1, and that they may need to press the "talk" button on the phone.  The kids took turns spraying the baking soda and discussing what happened.  We imagined we were spraying a fire extinguisher at a fire (just like real firefighters).

What might happen if we dump the entire container of vinegar on the baking soda?  Who is brave enough to try....P was!
