The Birth of Paul Bunyon...

On Tuesday our Mother Goose lesson was all about the birth of Paul Bunyan!  I am pretty excited about this mini unit!  Paul Bunyan is a tall tale that I remember hearing about many times as a child!  It was also fun to talk about babies and the birth of a baby because one of the kids in the preschool just got a new baby brother last week!
B is for baby!  We passed around our letter B flag as we sang, "Rock-a-bye Baby."  We also brainstormed a list of other words that start with the letter B.
I read the following story to the kids and then we listened to it on CD...
Mother Goose provided us with the following story telling pieces....
I passed out the pieces and when the kids heard the part of the story they were holding, they held it up for everyone to see.

We learned that when Paul Bunyan was a baby he liked to fall asleep on a raft.  Unfortunately, he rocked the raft so hard he cause a tidal wave!  We discussed what helps each of us fall asleep.  Then the kids worked as a team to make a raft out of blocks that could fit everyone.  I suggested they make the outline of the raft first to test if it would fit everyone.  The kids used the perimeter of the rug to make the outline of their raft.
 The outline...it fits everyone!
 Working hard...

All done and all smiles! Not very comfortable tough!
For our next activity we discussed how we know we are growing.  Mother Goose provided the following supplies to make a growth chart tree for each child...
The kids explored their height by measuring themselves against each other and different items in the room.  Then we worked together to put everyone in order from shortest to tallest.
Here the kids are making their own growth chart tree!  The kids could use the leaves to measure and mark their trees.  I encouraged them to measure friends and their family members when they got home.

For our next activity I placed our letter phonic cards in a paper bag...

The kids built a bed our of blocks and a blue blanket!  They took turns pulling a letter from the paper bag without looking.  If they got the letter B, they tucked the letter B flag in bed.

This photo makes me laugh!  G didn't get the letter B, and J is sharing in his disappointment.  Ha!

Next the kids worked on the letter B page in their journal.
They built the circle part of the lowercase letter 'b' by tracing a circular block.  They completed the word "baby," and they drew baby faces on the inside of the letter b's!
The kids worked on patterns in their math workbook...
They also worked on a find-the-hidden-letter activity in their literacy workbook...
This was our story for the day...
In the afternoon we made ice cream with the P's borrowed ice cream maker!  The kids loved it!
Yummy!  Soft-serve homemade chocolate ice cream!
There is nothing cuter than these faces!

After our ice cream treat, the kids played ice cream shop in our dramatic play area!
