Bridges and Maps...

On Friday our Mother Goose lessons were about bridges and maps...
The kids started the morning working in their workbooks...
Wheels addition practice, and drawing six people in the boat (5 & 6 are the numbers we are learning about this month)....
(The blue scribble on the boat page is a tornado.  A lot of the kids have been into drawing tornados lately.) :)

Next, the kids drew a picture of themselves in their favorite type of transportation on the cover of their new monthly journal.  They also completed the back cover maze...

Mother Goose provided us with a new number 5 counting card...
...there is a count and clip activity on the back of the counting card to challenge some of the older kids...
Mother Goose provided us with these counting manipualtives this month!  I am always amazed with the quality and amount of product that comes in each month's box of curriculum!
We used the trains and planes to practice counting on our new counting card...

Next I had the kids count two groups of 5 (five planes, and five trains).  When complete, we added both groups together and ended with a sum of ten!

We sang and acted out the song, "London Bridges!"  This is always a favorite of the kids!

Next the kids built a bridge out of cornstarch noodles and a craft stick.  We talked about how a bridge needs to be built strong to hold the weight of so many things.  We also discussed where we see bridges and why they are needed.

The kids LOVE cornstarch noodles!  They are so much fun!!!!
Next the kids worked on the letter W page in their literacy workbook...

...and a letter C and W beginning sounds activity.

We ended the morning with this book...
In the afternoon we did a mini lesson on maps...
We started by reading this HIGHLY RECOMMENDED book...
I showed the kids all the different maps I have in my room...

Then we made our own map with tape lines for roads!  Each child contributed two pieces of tape!
They stayed busy coloring and playing for quite a while!

I encouraged the kids to build with blocks or toys to make our map come to life (3D), but they were not too interested in doing this.
