Plums, Porcupines, and Birds...

On Monday of last week I combined a few Mother Goose lessons to keep us busy.  The kids and I have been trying to complete as much as we can because I was on vacation for 3 days, and we will be doing some Fall/Halloween activities next week.
The kids started out the morning working on the letter O page in their monthly journal...

"The orange is...orange."

"The orange is...on the tree."

"The orange is...rotten."

The kids also completed a few activities from their math and literacy workbooks.

Lastly, a letter O book...

The last type of fruit that we learned about that grows on a tree is a plum.

I showed the kids this new rhyme time poster.  The kids helped me read along, and pointed to the letters and words that they are familiar with.

Mother Goose provided us with these supplies to make a plum pie!!

Our next lesson was on porcupines...

During circle time I passed around a ball of play-dough.  Each child placed 3 toothpicks/quills in the ball.  They could see just how prickly a porcupine can be!

We sang, "Prickly, Pokey Porcupine" to the tune of "London Bridges." (Sleeps all day, and plays at night...)

I love seeing how unique each project turns out!

For our next activity I explained to the kids that porcupines are nocturnal.  I placed our wooden fruit beads that Mother Goose provided for us this month around the room.  When the lights were on the kids pretended to be porcupines that were sleeping.  When I turned the lights off, the kids pretended to wake up and search for for the imaginary food.

Next we practiced building -ig words with the following supplies.  The kids took turns with the porcupine ball.  They tossed it on a letter and then placed the letter in front of the -ig ending.  Then they read their word and matched it to the word in black writing.

For snack time we had fresh plums and letter cookies from Trader Joes...

In the afternoon it rained so we had time for a bird craft...

I was so impressed with how independent the kids were with this craft!  They did an AWESOME job rolling their paper bags into nests!

I loved seeing the orange paper that they cut and pasted to make a beak and feet!
