Outdoor Chores...

On Thursday our Mother Goose lesson was all about outdoor chores!  Who knew chores could be so entertaining and fun for kids?!
The kids started out the morning working on the letter N in their literacy workbook...
They also cut apart rakes from their math workbook and placed them in order from smallest to biggest...

During circle time we added the letter N to our alphabet house...
I bought a new Styrofoam block with plastic golf tees and hammers at Lakeshore.  The kids took turns pounding the nails as we sang "If You're a Helper" sung to the tune of "Happy and You Know It."
"If you're a helper and you know it,
pound the nail.
If you're a helper and you know,
pound the nail.
If you're a helper and you know,
and you really want to show it.
If you're a helper and you know it,
pound the nail!"

We discussed that homes are made of many different materials (stone, wood, metal, brick, etc.)  Mother Goose provided us with this new board game.  Four people at a time could play.  The goal of the game was to build your home first.  The children took turns with the spinner, and placed the same amount of building materials on their home.  If they spun a -1, they had to take one piece off the game board.
Four volunteers demonstrated how to use the game as everyone watched.  Then I left the game out for the kids to play with again during free play time.

The friendship word we have been learning about this month is helpful...
We headed outside and I read the book "Why Should I Protect Nature?" to the kids.  We discussed how we can help take care of the environment.  Some outdoor tasks we came up with were: water a dry plant, pick up litter, do not disturb animals and their homes, mow the lawn, and rake the leaves, pick up sticks, and keep an eye out for rocks in the grass.
We took out our outdoor chore toys!  The kids had fun being helpful and playing at the same time!

S thought this big leaf pile was a bird's nest.  She said, "Shhh!  There's a nest!"  She did not want to disturb any birdies!  I told her that was so sweet, but that it was just a pile of dirt and old grass.  Ha!
After the kids played and completed some outdoor chores for a while, I gave them their own "I am helpful" bracelet that Mother Goose provided for each child.
Another helpful chore we thought of was to wash the car.  We gathered our outdoor trucks and I provided the kids with a couple of sponges and water bottles!  The kids had so much fun washing the trucks!

Before heading inside we walked all the way around my house and I asked the kids to look and feel to see what type of materials my house was made out of.

They all wanted to ring the doorbell for fun!
I taught the kids what the peephole on a door is!  I lifted them all up in the garage to look outside!
This was our book for the day!  The kids were rolling with laughter!
In the afternoon I set out a few outdoor chore toy stations!  One very helpful outdoor chore is to get the mail everyday!  I set out a small writing station with our toy mailbox!
I set out some wood scraps of different shapes and sandpaper...
Our battery powered drill set with a few drill deign mats...
Our new Styrofoam hammer and nail set...
Some construction worker clothes, a toolbox filled with tools, and some more batter powered power tools!
The kids were so excited to get their hands on everything!  All these toys kept them busy and engaged all afternoon!!!!

How sweet!  L wrote me a sweet letter!

G loved the tape measure!

The kids loved stretching out the tape measure to its maximum length and then watching it wind back in!
