Holes...

On Thursday our Mother Goose lesson was all about animal holes!  We learned that snakes, foxes, opossums, raccoons, skunks, moles, and mice all live in a hole in the ground!
The kids started out the morning working on the letters U and V in their literacy workbook...

They also practiced writing all the uppercase letters in their journal.  This was a lot of writing for them, so I was very impressed with their effort!

During circle time I passed around a small bucket that we pretended was a hole in the ground.  I placed the letters U and V from our alphabet house in the bucket.  Each child took a turn reaching inside the "hole" and pulling out a "letter animal."  The kids identified which letter they pulled out, and the sound the letter makes.  We also brainstormed words that that start with each letter.

Then one volunteer added the letters to our alphabet house.  We sang, "What Lives in a Hole?" to the tune of "The Farmer in the Dell."
"What lives in a hole?
What lives in a hole?
(Name) can you tell me now?
What lives in a hole?
A rabbit lives in a hole...."
For our next activity, I asked the kids how they think burrows keep animals safe.  I explained that burrows keep animals safe and warm because large predators can't fit in the hole.  Mother Goose provided us with the following materials to make a bunny headband!  The kids had so much fun acting and playing after they completed their project!  (FYI - These sticker eyes are their favorite craft supply that Mother Goose gives us!)

Check out these adorable bunnies!

For our next activity we discussed how deep a bunny hole might be and what it might look like underground.  I set out these play-dough supplies for the kids to play with.  Mother Goose provided us with these plastic bunnies last month with our "Growing Gardens" curriculum unit.  I also took out our Lakeshore alphabet and number play-dough stampers.  I encouraged the kids to use the opposite end of the stampers to make holes in their play-dough!

These kids are so imaginative!  They made trees with the play-dough using the alphabet and number stampers as tree trunks!
Check out those colorful trees!
While outside I took out our beanbag toss and the kids played "Rabbit in the Hole!"

Future corn-hole player here...he challenged himself to toss the beanbags and get them to land on the circle in the center of the picnic table!  That is some good hand/eye coordination!
I read these books outside for story-time!  They were great for what we were learning about!
Mother Goose also provided us with these number cards, and "counting holes."
I placed all the counting hole cards in a brown paper bag.  Each child took a turn choosing a card from the bag with their eyes closed.

They counted the "bunny holes" on the card...
...and then hopped to the matching number on our Lakeshore number mats.
