Getting to Know You...

On Friday our Mother Goose lesson was all about getting to know our friends.  I can't help but comment on this absolutely ADORABLE photo on our topic poster for the day...
Getting to know you was a great topic idea!  The kids understood the concept, but they needed a lot of help with understanding what types of questions they could ask their friends to get to know them better.  We came up with a list of great questions...
What is your name?
How old are you?
Do you have any pets?
Who lives at home with you?
What is your favorite food/restaurant?
What is your favorite toy?
Do you like sleeping with a blanket or stuffed animal?
Where do you like to go on the weekends?
What are you going to do for your next birthday?
Do you have a cabin?
Do you go to your Grandma and/or Grandpa's house?

Then we sang the song, "Do You Like..." To the tune of "The Muffin Man!"
We inserted a food, activity, color, etc., and the kids who liked the object or activity stated in the song were invited to stand up.

"Do you like to play soccer,
play soccer, play soccer?
Do you like to play soccer?
Then stand up now!"

Next we sat in a circle and passed around the hands-on letter F's.  The kids traced the letters with their fingers and then said, "Letter F is for friends!"

Next, I showed the kids the fox Phonic Photo Card from our circle time display...

We discussed which animals can be our friends and which cannot.  I explained the difference between a wild and tame animal.  The kids crawled around the room and pretended to be wild foxes!

Then the kids made a letter F fox for a craft!  They turned out so cute!

Next the kids worked on the letter F page in their journal.  They practiced writing the letter F on handwriting lines and then they traced their hand.  They wrote "5 fingers" on their page, and then printed a hand-print on their hand outline using an ink pad.

Next we played a new "Elephant and Friends" board game that Mother Goose provided for us this month.  The goal of the game was to be the first one to get to the elephant stuck in the tree.  The kids had so much fun with this!
Whenever someone wins we always practice saying, "Congratulations" to the winner!  The kids always give a group hug as well!  Check out these adorable and encouraging group hugs...

I brought our hands-on number 1 outside.  We sat in a circle and we discussed what we think we can teach a friend, and what we think we can learn from a friend.  We passed around the hands-on number 1 and the kids practiced tracing it with their finger.  I invited one child at a time to stand up and share what their favorite sport is.  Then they did a movement (kick, toss, jump, etc.) just one time with a toy of their choice.  The others mimicked that movement and they all said, "One (kick)!"  This was an excellent kinesthetic activity to reinforce our number of the month!

I called a few kids at a time throughout the day to work on this math activity from their math workbook...

I also worked one-on-one with the kids on this rhyming activity from their literacy workbook...
These were our books for the day...
We were so excited to celebrate this cutie's 5th birthday!!!!  J requested a dinosaur cake and the bakery definitely did not disappoint!
