On Tuesday our Mother Goose lesson was all about listening to the air (the sounds of nature)...
The kids started out the morning working on a number worksheet in their math workbook...
They also completed a rhyming activity in their literacy workbook. They were supposed to match the color of the birds on the left to the objects pictures on the right. I could not figure out the color grey bird for the life of me! Ha!
The kids also completed the last page of their Nature Collection book.
"You can plant seeds in the dirt." The kids are very proud of the writing they have completed in these books!
During circle time we searched the theme poster for things that make sound. We discussed that air does not make sound unless it is moving.
The kids danced to the instrumental song "Dancing in the Wind" from our Nature Detectives CD.
Our number for the day was 10! I placed 10 feathers in the bag...
We counted our 10 fingers and our 10 toes...
Our mystery shape for the day was the oval. A bird's egg is in the shape of an oval!
For our next activity I asked the kids to brainstorm a list of animal sounds they have heard outside. Then we listened to different bird calls on the computer from the following website:
I set out our "Little Live Pet" birdhouse and battery operated birds. These birds sing, and record your voice! The kids LOVE these! I encouraged them to listen to the bird calls and then record their own version of a bird call in the voice recorder!
Next, the kids shared what their favorite sound is while I worked one-on-one with each child on a postcard writing activity. They used inventive writing to complete a sentence to someone special.
"Grandma, I hear birds outside."
For our next activity we discussed some scary sounds we have heard outside (thunder, large animals, wind, etc.) I did my best to diffuse any big fears the kids had. Mother Goose provided us with these pattern picture cards, and picture cube...
A few volunteers demonstrated how to create a pattern by rolling the cube two or three times to get a pattern started. Then they completed the pattern on their own with the pattern cards. After a few demonstrations, I left this out during free-play time so that each child had a chance to explore and practice with it.
These were our books for the day. They were a perfect match to what we were learning about!!!
