We had a very busy and fun-filled St. Patrick's Day and a birthday celebration on Tuesday! When the children arrived in the morning they were free to play in our St. Patrick's Day themed sensory table with rainbow colored rice...
They could play with our stuffed Leprechaun, gold coins, and mini pots of gold.
The kids played A LOT of rounds of Hide 'n' Go Seek with these toys!
All the kids really loved the leprechaun. They named it "Lucky," "Lighty," and "Lick."
Don't you love those letter L names? :)
I put gel window clings on the light table. I asked the kids what they like best about window clings and they said, "They are cool because they stick to everything!"
We started a learning activity right away with breakfast.
We ate green pears and graphed the marshmallows in our Lucky Charms cereal!
Our birthday boy!
We started circle time with a green scavenger hunt!
I changed some of the "Find something" things to "Think of something."
We recited a Five Wee Leprechauns rhyme...
We estimated how many gold coins we thought would fit in one mini black pot.
Then we counted to verify if our estimate was right or not. The pot fit 39 coins!
We used green clovers to measure how tall we are! We compared our measurements with our friends to see who was the tallest and who was the shortest...
We sorted green clovers by their size and placed them in order from biggest to smallest...
Lastly, a few volunteers made patterns with the clovers...
For our art project Mother Goose Time gave us the idea to make salt and watercolor pictures.
First we squirted glue on our paper. Some of us traced glue on our pencil drawing...
Then we shook salt on our glue. We used an empty spice container...
Lastly, we used an eyedropper to drop watercolor paints on the salt.
It was fun to watch the colors spread!
Next we mixed primary colors to make all the colors of the rainbow!
We painted a picture at the easel! I included fat and skinny paintbrushes for each color...
What beautiful works of art!
Next we went outside and used our prism to make a REAL rainbow!
The kids loved when the rainbow went on top of their hands...
While in the backyard the kids constructed a Leprechaun trap! It was so much fun to listen to them talk about Leprechauns all day. They blamed all the messes in the preschool on the Leprechauns too! Ha ha ha! They believed that a Leprechaun would come buy and try to bite the blue balls. When he did, they would trap them by putting a horseshoe around its neck and draping the parachute on top of him. They said they were going to put the Leprechaun in the zoo! When I asked them what they would do if the Leprechaun was friendly they said they would keep him as a pet.
Here was our very fun Leprechaun lunch!!! The Ranch for the broccoli was in a St. Patty's Day shot glass!
Show of hands...Who thinks this is the best lunch ever???
This special birthday boy was leaving early to go to the zoo with his family, so we had his birthday treat early. He brought us a cookie cake to share! Many thanks!
After lunch we had a ABC relay. Two teams...each team had their own set of shamrocks with the letters of the alphabet on them. They had to put the letters in order from A to Z. They did an awesome job!
Next we built -ot ending words on a black POT!
This was our book for the day. It was pretty cool! I might have to buy this one! It talked about the history of St. Patrick's Day and showed real photos...
This was the book in our listening center for today...
Snack time! Green cookies, and green grapes!
Did you know they say grapes are really Leprechaun candy?!?!
Some of big kids constructed their own Leprechaun trap in the backyard yesterday. They believed the Leprechaun would walk up the steps, try to reach for the coin, and then fall into the trap. Brilliant!
Well, they had some luck! The Leprechaun came, but he escaped! Some of his hair must have gotten caught in the trap because the boys found a ball of orange and green fuzz. They also found their gold coin. The Leprechaun must have been too afraid and ran off without it!
During the afternoon hours the kids played "Lucky Dog!"
Another activity was CVC word match-ups with rainbows and clouds...
I made a special present for all the kids to take home...
Happy St. Patrick's Day!
